You're telling me! The amount of junk bots signing up and now posting spam messages is getting very annoying.

I think I'll have to start doing manual registrations and add one or two non generic (ie that other phpBB systems don't use) steps to signup to stop the bots.

Well I've deleted anyone registering with an email address ending in mail.ru. It's a simple measure but should actually stop a lot of the bots.

Further measures will have to be taken when I have the time. I'm coming to the end of a three month work contract on Friday, so if I don't get another job by the following Monday, I'll have time to do some Zzap stuff again! :)

In some sites, if you want to register, you are shown an image with text in it, and you are asked to transcribe the text. Bots can't do that (unless they have a very smart OCR engine).

Could be a nice idea (as long as you can find an automatic generator of image-ified text)

That system is already in place here! But I think they get around it by having bots do most of the work but then they send the image to a real person to decode. :(

I'm looking into extra phpBB modules that might help the situation.
